Obituary of Stephen C. Amberg

Amberg, Stephen Charles Steve died peacefully at his home in Spencerport surrounded by the love of his family on February 6, 2017. Steve was predeceased by his parents, William and Jean Amberg, and his grandson, Charles Joseph Hendryk. He is deeply loved and missed by his life partner, Zelma Kostyshak (and her son Matthew and mother Joyce Bennett), his daughter Sarah Hendryk (Michael), his cherished granddaughter, Olivia, and two siblings, Susan Haines (Ronald) and Michael Amberg (Kimberly) as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Steve was born January 14, 1948, in St. Anne, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in accounting. He was a retired manufacturing CPA, working for a number of companies, including Bausch and Lomb, where he met his life partner. Steve was an avid cyclist. After being diagnosed with Stage 4 head and neck cancer in 2010, he, along with his life partner Zelma, biked over 17,000 miles on the Erie Canal path. He used his knowledge of bikes while serving as a volunteer for Camp Abilities Brockport, helping to maintain bikes for their sports camp for children who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind. His family is very grateful for the excellent and compassionate care that he received from Dr. Jonathan Friedberg, Lynn Rich NP, Anna Morrison RN, and their team at the Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center as well as Dr. John Coniglio, Dr. Steven Cannady, and Dr. Hong Zhang. Steve requested that there be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a fund to honor him with a memorial bench along his two favorite bike paths (Erie Canal and Duchess Rail Trail) and donations will be given to his favorite charities – Wilmont Cancer Institute and Camp Abilities Brockport.
