On Saturday, January 10, 2015, we commended my Dad's spirit to Heaven. As an absolutely beautiful funeral mass was coming to an end at St. John's Evangelist Church in Spencerport, a lone bagpiper walked up to his casket playing Amazing Grace. He ushered the entorage to the rear of the church and as the pall cloth was removed the American Flag was placed over Dad's casket. My nephews, cousins and brother-in- law carried it outside and it was placed on the wheelie where the Veterans were surrounding the area on the walks, and in the streets. They prayed and fired a volley of 21 gun salute, Taps was played by a single trumpeter and the flag was removed and folded by two current Navy Sailors. They handed it to my mother and praised her for the service that my Father had provided his country. A sight so meritorious, so beautiful that the 9 degree temperature was barely noticable. The desire to see this formality unfold was so great that nearly everyone present was surrounding the walks watching this ceremony. It was so befitting for my Dad.
At the Mass. The St. John's Folk Group, his favorite music, played all of the hymns. Nearly 30 or his grandchildren and great grandchildren carried roses up with the Eucharistic gifts and placed them in the vases of "Grampa's Garden" on the altar. Old friends came to pay their respects. Tears of both joy and sadness flowed in the pews of the tiny church home that had been his for nearly 60 years. Two of his Sons-in-law gave fitting tributes of his life and times over the span of his 94 years. Impossible to summarize in a 10 minute eulogy but all the more sweet and full of admiration, love and the humor that was only his.
God's presence and Daddy's presence was evident as was the great love that his wife, children, grandchildren and friends have had for him. The Angels have carried him away from us in body, but his spirit, his lessons and stories, his jokes and his endearing devotion will live on in us forever.
Rest high on the mountain, Daddy. You have earned your place at the right hand of our Dear God.

For 4 months before my coming home from Viet Nam Dad and I wrote about getting me a car. He kept telling me a decent used car would be waiting in the driveway for me. The day I came home NOTHING was in the driveway. Many thoughts went through my mind in an instant.
He asked me to open the door to the garrage and there facing me was a BRAND NEW candy apple red with white top 1967 Ford Galexie 500XL hardtop with gleaming chrome, bucket seats, and floor shifter.

Dear Jean and all the family,
Sorry about Dick's passing. He sure was a special person. Talking with him and listening about all the trips and his family. He has a great love for all of you. So glad I had the chance to talk to him in October.
There is an old Irish saying...death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. May God bless you all and keep you all in his care.
