We were climbing a cliff in Stony Brook Park and reached a point with an overhang and we were stuck. We reached for hand holds that we couldn't see but they all crumbled or broke off. It is a lot harder to go back down. Friends stood above us trying to direct our hand holds. Finally Matt looked at me and made his eyebrows go up and down (we watched a lot of Groucho Marx movies) then he jumped up a little and I watched as his body seemed to float upward. He had found the beginning of a hand hold and took the chance that it would be a better hold a couple inches higher and he was right. After he was on the overhang he directed me so I could get up. The last 10-20 feet were a piece of cake.
We climbed a lot of cliffs and one time at Letch worth State Park we climbed a real hard one. Earlier, Matt had mentioned that he liked my new boots. I woke up in the hospital thinking I fell off the cliff and Matt was wearing my boots. I couldn't talk yet but I looked at him and managed to say "boots" and he did the eyebrow thing again. I laughed and he told me what happened to me. Turns out we made it up the cliff but I fell out of a tree 30 minutes later. I escaped with a slight concussion and bare feet.
Evidently Matt was guarding my boots so nefarious individuals wouldn't steal them.

Many years ago, Matt was a wonderful help to my Aunt Margaret and Uncle Joe. I remember well this kind soul! My "birthday book" includes the entry: Joseph Matthew Stanzione, born October 14th, 1992. Matt's youngest child named after my Uncle Joe. My sincere sympathy to the family.

Matt and I used to explore. We would go wherever a door led us. We were never destructive or stole things. It was just the explorer in our soul.
Sometimes we took long walks and ended up in places we shouldn't. Once, before we had cars, we were walking from the apartment complex where Matt's sister lived to a roast beef restaurant on west Henrietta Road and on the way we were passing a car lot. We noticed a fire escape ladder running down from the roof of the building. We jumped the fence and climbed the ladder to the roof. While we were up there we noticed that there were some dogs on the other side of the building. The dogs had not noticed us yet. Now we had to get down and get out without the dogs noticing. However, the dogs were starting to walk around the building. It may have been that they heard us and were now going to investigate. Using sign language and trying hard not to laugh we came up with a plan. We threw stones from the roof towards the far fence. The dogs started barking and they all converged on the area of the noise. We went silently down the fire escape on the other side and then sprinted to the far fence. Not a word was spoken until we were over the fence. Then we broke down in laughter so bad we couldn't stand up. The dogs had come to investigate and barked at the two crazy boys on the other side of the fence.
We got sandwiches at the roast beef restaurant and after a large bite; I saw a couple train cars sitting on the track across the street. I managed to point and say, "train" with my mouth full of roast beef. Matt looked at me and said"yes" then he pointed at a car and said "car". Then he pointed at a building and said "building". I started laughing so much I choked on my sandwich. We spent the next half hour exploring the train cars.

Matt was a humble man really, he didn't ask for much…but he offered a lot.
He was genuinely happy when others did well. He made friends and kept them. Matt loved his family and had a great sense of humor. He was always there when you needed him and spoke up when we needed encouragement.
Matt, you did good, and we are all richer because we were allowed to know you and love you.

My Uncle Matt was truly one of a kind. His caring and friendly demeanor always made us feel welcomed and loved. Having known him all of my life, the stories are endless and continue to bring a smile to my face. During this sad time, it is comforting to know that my Aunt Missi and Uncle Matt are together again.

Dear Matt. You were the dearest son-in-law my parents could have wished for. You were a great brother-in-law. We laughed a lot and we shared many thoughtful conversations. I will miss those times and moments and I will miss your kind and uplifting presence. Thank you for being a great uncle to my children, but that is who you were, Matt. Always there, always responsible, always caring. We love you. We will miss you very much.

Canoeing, jumping off bridges in the canal, camping, exploring forests, climbing cliffs, motocross, watching Marx Brother marathons, playing poker all night long with a tight group of friends and laughing…always laughing.
