Obituary of Ray E. Mandeville

SPENCERPORT – Ray E. Mandeville passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020 at The Friendly Home in Pittsford.

Born Dec. 19, 1928, in Rochester, he was predeceased by Olga (Bozinovich), his devoted wife of 65 years, parents, Charles and Lizzie Mandeville, four brothers, Donald, Carl, James, William, and sister, Sally (Bour). 

A graduate of York Central High School where he was a class officer and athlete, Mr. Mandeville was a proud U.S. Army veteran serving in the infantry and armed cavalry.  He also served for more than 20 years in the Army National Guard, retiring as Second Lieutenant.  Ray was a lifelong blood donor.

While employed as a salesman in the steel industry, Mr. Mandeville attended night school at Rochester Institute of Technology earning his degree in 1973.  He worked for Brace-Mueller-Huntley, Inc., Ritter Metal, and Peter A. Frasse & Co.

Ray met the love of his life, Olga, on a square dancing blind date.  This was the beginning of a romance that would last more than 65 years.  The couple married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Rochester on Aug. 23, 1953.  Olga and Ray purchased land on McCleary Road and he helped build their family home in Spencerport where they resided for more than 60 years.  They raised two daughters, Nancy and Janet, in that home.

Ray and Olga welcomed their grandchildren and enjoyed their many visits and everyday family gatherings playing games and watching TV together.  Both were avid Yankees fans and Ray loved the Buffalo Bills.  People who called the house when the Yankees were playing would hear “The game is on,” and a quick good-bye.

Ray and Olga loved to walk Greece Towne Mall and stop for lunch or dinner at Critics Restaurant.  They befriended many on the staff learning their stories and remaining close.  They also loved to travel together, often visiting family in Florida and California.  They traveled to Europe and Hawaii and enjoyed Sunday rides throughout the Rochester area.

Ray had a quick wit, wry smile, and charisma that charmed family, friends, and his phenomenal care-givers while living at Glenmere Assisted Living at Cloverwood in Pittsford and The Friendly Home.

He leaves his two daughters, Nancy (James) Gertner, Janet (Jonathan) Cummings; grandchildren, Jason Schultz (Marya Kaszibinski), Michael (Casey) Schultz, Emily Cummings, Patrick Cummings, Allyson (Timothy) Bouchard, Veronica Gertner and Jacqueline Gertner (Andrew Belfield); a great-granddaughter; his brother-in-law, Peter Bozinovich; nieces, nephews, and friends.

A private graveside service was held at Fairfield Cemetery in Spencerport.  A memorial celebration of life will be planned next summer.
