I have just found the obituary for Earl and am so saddened to hear of his passing. Earl was my Master's degree advisor at SUNY Brockport, and we corresponded for many years afterwards. I walked into his Modern British Lit class as an exchange student from England, and being in that class changed the path of my studies and my career. Earl's gift in the classroom was a quietly understated teaching style that brought the literature to life and gave the theories coherence--even deconstruction (that quip is for you, Earl). He was a brilliant teacher and a wonderful person, and I'm glad I got to know him.

Earl and Mary welcomed me and and my partner with open arms when we started teaching at Brockport many years ago. Their generosity warmed my heart then, and I loved seeing them whenever we met at random conferences after we had moved on. I am so sorry to learn of Earl’s passing. He was kind, smart, and always up for good conversation.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Earl on several projects at the college. He was a great friend and thoughtful collaborator. After retirement, Dotti and I always visiting with him over a glass of wine at the Society for Chamber Music concerts - critiquing, commiserating and generally savoring his quiet demeanor. We will truly miss him. Larry and Dotti Humm

Earl was a wonderful advisor, mentor, and friend who basically pulled me through a Master’s degree at SUNY Brockport. Later, he continued to advise me on publishing and presenting my research — he had extensive experience in those areas. In recent years I would see him at the pool or the library and he always inquired about my family and career. He had a quiet but critical influence on many students’ teaching careers and lives.

We are very saddened to learn of Earl's passing and very much enjoyed our visits with him and Mary (a colleague from our careers in Spencerport). The time spent with Earl working on his and his family's applications for the Sons of the American Revolution was both instructive and fun. You all have our sincerest condolences. So very sorry for your loss. I was Earl's secretary in the English Department. He was a great chairman, professor and friend. I was just going over last year's Chrisitmas cards and thinking what I should write in my note to him. We haven't had lunch in a couple years. I remember his note from last year and he said how ill he had been, so thought he would say he's feeling so much better this year. He was an amazing man.
