Obituary of Joseph G. Rittler

Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, surrounded by his children. He was predeceased by his father, Hermann Rittler, mother, Leona Rittler, brothers, Alfred Rittler and Carl Rittler, and ex-wife Susan Rittler. He is survived by his children, Lisa (Terry) Guarino, Laura Slusarenco, Christine Divencenzo, Susan (Jeffrey) Richmond, and Joseph (Allison) Rittler, brothers, Hermann (Patricia) Rittler and Jack (Sharon) Rittler, sister-in-law Carole Rittler, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his life-long friend Anthony Bellavia, as well as many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Joe was born in Rochester in July 1940. He was one of five boys born to his parents, who had recently immigrated from Germany. He loved telling stories about his childhood neighborhood, having grown up in the area of Emerson Street. During his senior year, Joe’s family moved to North Greece Road. Joe graduated from Jefferson High School. He went on to attend Alfred University followed by the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. He took great pride in his career at General Railway Signal and later his own consulting company.

Joe married Sue in June 1968. They raised their family in Spencerport. Joe was a loving father and mentor who cherished his five children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Joe loved working outdoors, putting countless hours into his beautiful gardens and landscape. He also enjoyed walking through his woods and adored the many old-growth trees therein. He was not one to sit idle, being happiest outdoors among nature and his trees.

In his later years, Joe enjoyed painting landscapes, country scenes, and nature. In addition to painting, Joe also enjoyed time spent at antique auctions and flea markets. Joe never turned down an opportunity to visit with friends, whether it was at home, or enjoying a cup of coffee out with his pals. Most of all, Joe loved spending time with his family, whether talking on the phone, taking a ride down country roads, or attending family gatherings. Joe will be missed by many and forgotten by none. Forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to UR Hospice in Webster, the Alzheimer’s Association, or planting a tree in Joe’s memory.
